Leaf Smut

General Information

Leaf Smut, caused by the fungus Entyloma oryzae, is generally considered a minor disease of rice but can cause losses under favorable conditions. It primarily affects older leaves.

Symptoms
  • Small, black, linear pustules (sori) appear on leaves, typically on the upper surface.
  • Pustules rupture, releasing black, powdery spore masses.
  • Affected leaves may turn yellow and senesce prematurely.
Preventive Measures
  • Use certified disease-free seeds.
  • Practice good field sanitation by removing and destroying infected plant debris.
  • Avoid water stress and ensure balanced fertilization.
